Former Warren Central High School football coach Kevin Wright is moving to the college game.
Just over six weeks after resigning as coach and athletic director at Union High School in Tulsa, Okla., Wright has been hired as offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky.
Wright, 42, a Western Kentucky graduate who was 134-63 in 16 seasons as a high school coach, will work for Hilltoppers coach David Elson, an Indianapolis native who played at Cathedral and Butler.
"It's one of those things where if you don't believe in God, you'd better start believing now," said Wright, who guided Union to a 7-4 record in his only season after a six-year stint at Warren Central resulted in a 71-12 mark and three Class 5A state championships.
"What happened in Oklahoma was tough on our family. But as a man of faith, I believe that when one door shuts, another opens. This is a great opportunity, one that is too good to pass up."
Elson said Wright will help implement a no-huddle spread attack at Western Kentucky, a former NCAA Division I-AA national champion moving to NCAA Division I-A in the fall. Western Kentucky will be a I-A independent the next two seasons before joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2009.
"His teams always have scored a lot of points and moved the ball," Elson said of Wright, with whom he first interacted eight years ago when Wright coached at Louisville Trinity. "If you're productive at the places he's coached, you can be productive at this level. Football is football."
Wright will see a number of familiar faces at Western Kentucky, including four from his Warren Central teams -- returning linemen Andrew Campbell and Jacob McLaurin plus two recent transfers, linebacker Josh Bailey from Indiana and running back Dexter Taylor from Tulsa.
